The story begins from the childhood days of Eddie Jaku. Like many children today, Eddie Jaku also wanted to do something good by studying. He wanted to follow the path shown by his father. And wanted to become an engineer.

By 1933, Eddie Jaku had graduated from school in Germany. He wanted to pursue further studies but then Hitler came to power. Like other Jewish children, the future of Eddie Jaku had completely changed as soon as Hitler came to power.

Before Hitler came, Eddie had never seen himself as Jewish. His father had always said that first of all he is German and then at some point comes Jewish. But things were about to change after Hitler came.

When Hitler was elected, he made people aware of his anti-Semitic views from the beginning. Then Germany lost the First World War in 1918 and due to the defeat in the war, the country had to pay a huge amount to the victorious powers. The country could not afford that amount. Due to which a situation of starvation had arisen in Germany.

Because of this, the people of Germany had become very upset and anger had also started filling them. People did not even have money left to eat two meals at home. He started considering himself a slave of a cruel ruler. That ruler repeatedly told them that he would take them back to the golden period of Germany. But the truth was telling a different story.

If we talk about the Jewish community, then this community has been at the center of the culture and economy of Leipzig for hundreds of years. But when Hitler came to power, he brought with him a tide of anti-Semitism.

Because of Hitler's thinking, Eddie started feeling that the situation was going to get worse very soon. Because Eddie's dream was to study. He was not even allowed to go to high school.

What effect will it be having? If we talk about Eddie's family, then a few years ago this family used to live with respect in the city. But suddenly this family started being treated like enemies. The family which considered the country as its honour. He was told that you people are nothing for this country. In such a situation, those people were feeling like betrayal.

But Eddie's father did not lose courage, he had understood that he would have to find some way for his child's education. He also thought of a solution for this but it was going to be more terrible. For this the small child had to leave his parents and go to some unknown place.

Friends, there will be more to come, but before that 'Eddie' goes into flashback remembering an incident and says that "75 years ago in the days after the war I saw a 'Nazi' being executed in Belgium for his war crimes. I got the news that he was being held captive. I arranged to meet him and then after the arrangement was made, I asked him - Why did you do this? Because of which you are being punished. He could not answer and started crying. He I didn't feel bad, he was actually someone else's shadow.. I sympathized with him. He looked so weak as if he was already dead and I couldn't get the answer to my question.."

Eddie's life falls apart after returning to Leipzig

There was a way with the help of which Eddie could get a good education. But for this method he would have to show himself as something else. He had to become something he was not.

His father did something similar, he made some fake documents, showing that Eddie was a German orphan. Whose name is Walter Schleif. And its parents had abandoned it as soon as it was born.

Now Eddie had to live in an orphanage in another city, away from his city, with a different identity. Suddenly he was told that you have no connection with your parents and family. Now the next 5 years were about to begin. Eddie was not going to meet his family in these 5 years. During these 5 years, Eddie was also going through the teenage years. This time was very difficult for him. He felt homesick, he felt as if someone else's soul had suddenly been placed in his body.

Then a time came when he had graduated, he decided that now he would go to his home to meet his parents. During this time, the 20th wedding anniversary of his parents was also coming.

But he did not know that this decision was going to prove completely wrong. Avoiding everyone, Eddie reached his home town of Leipzig at night, but he did not find anyone at the door. He did not know that his family members had gone away from that house. He left that house so that he would stay away from Eddie and would never meet him. So that there is no problem in Eddie's life.

But there was going to be a big problem in Eddie's life because he had returned to Leipzig. The people of the old neighborhood had seen him, he still went inside the house and slept hugging his old bed.

But his sleep did not last long, many Nazis took him out of the house and started beating him. Many of these Nazis were his old acquaintances. But now the humanity in him had ended. He had become a part of such a crowd. Those who just come to kill someone.

Eddie was badly injured, blood was flowing from every part of his body. He was not able to understand anything. Then the mob burned down Eddie's childhood home in front of him. His childhood memories were burning before Eddie's eyes. He was crying and regretting his decision.

Camp Buchenwald was terrible, now listen to the story of this camp

He was taken captive to the same zoo where Eddie used to visit as a child. This time he was not enjoying at all. His body was badly injured.

Many Jews were brought there overnight, and in the morning everyone was to be taken to Camp Buchenwald. The conditions of that camp were beyond limits. There was not even a toilet there. Thousands of people were confined in small compartments.

Neither was anyone given food nor drinking water. Disease was widespread throughout the camp. People thrown into that camp used to pray day and night for their death.

Till a few days ago, Eddie's life was being spent among educated Germans. People looked at him with respect. But after a few days his life had become worse than hell. The camp of Buchenwald was worse than hell.

Now think for yourself how thousands of people were living in such camps? However, there is no doubt that no one was left there to live, but to die.

Eddie could not understand how someone could be so cruel? There people were chased and shot in the back. People's nails were pulled out again and again.

But Eddie's luck favored him and he met a soldier who was known to him. The soldier knew that Eddie was a mechanical engineer and told his commander that his skills could be of great use to the Nazis.

After this, Eddie got a chance to visit the Nazi factory, after which Eddie's family was also contacted. Eddie's father was given the responsibility to take Eddie to the factory, but Eddie's father did not do so, he used a jugaad and took Eddie to the border of Belgium. Where he took the help of some smugglers and planned to cross the border.

The smugglers made Eddie cross the border through the jungle, but when Eddie looked back, he did not see his father anywhere... Tears were flowing from his eyes. He started hating his life. He was feeling that what is the meaning of this life without parents? He didn't know what twists and turns were going to come in his life?

 

Eddie was freaking out to meet his family, he couldn't understand anything

Eddie had reached Belgium but his father was not as lucky as him. He was caught with the help of search light and handed over to the soldiers. Where even the limits of barbarity were crossed with them.

Along with this, Eddie's mother and sister were also arrested by the soldiers in Leipzig.

Eventually, after several months of struggle, Eddie's parents and sister were released and after much difficulty they reached Belgium. However, by then Eddie had left from there.

Once again Eddie was arrested at the cross border and was sent to a Belgian camp. Where he was imprisoned for a year.

After his arrest in Belgium, there were many difficulties and somehow Eddie managed to reach the camp in Poland, during which he also witnessed the war between Germany and Belgium.

Then one day, with the help of a boy, Eddy managed to escape from Poland and return to Belgium, because Eddy was looking for his family. Eventually his search was completed and he was reunited with his family in Belgium.

Auschwitz took away Eddie's family, and with it his will to live also ended.

When Eddie met his family in Belgium, that moment was the happiest of his life. But this happiness did not last long, someone complained to the authority. And the entire family was arrested and thrown on a train heading towards Auschwitz.

Yes, if a person is made to sit then it goes to the person. At that time no one was being treated like a human being.

That journey was for 9 days, and no one was given anything to eat or drink during these 9 days. No one even had a place to sit. Thousands of people were crammed into a small compartment.

In this terrible journey of 9 days, Eddie lost his parents forever. A small child did not even get a chance to say final goodbye to his parents.

Eddie had never seen a worse place than Auschwitz, now imagine for yourself how bad a place Auschwitz must have been? Every night death used to wreak havoc there. People were made to sleep without clothes in minus degree temperature. God knows how many people used to turn into ice in the morning.

Every night seemed like the last night to Eddie. There, a lot of work was done from the prisoners. If any prisoner refused to work, he was immediately put to death. And his death was not an ordinary death but a soul-crushing death.

Seeing all this, many prisoners became so upset that they took their own lives. Many people threw themselves into the naked stars.

Now the question arises that why was Eddie alive? The answer lies in the motivation, Eddie had come to know that his sister was still alive. And it is similar in some other camp. He had to reach his sister somehow. Perhaps this is why Eddie never tried to kill himself

Now Auschwitz will remain alive in the story, turning point will come in this chapter

It was January 18, 1945, a commander decided that the Auschwitz camp had to be evacuated as soon as possible. The Russian Army wanted to stop it.

More people were left to die on the icy road with little clothing and no food or drink. And they were warned that anyone who stopped would be shot.

It sounds scary just hearing this, now imagine that the author of this book has faced all this in reality.

This journey was both dangerous and difficult, Eddie was becoming weak, but he did not lose courage. One of Eddie's friends named Kurt was severely weakened.

Eventually the entire group had reached a place where they could spend the night. Gradually Eddy progressed and reached another camp. But in the meantime he had lost his special friend Kurt forever.

But he had learned a lesson that the other name of life is to move forward. Despite all the difficulties, Eddie did not lose courage and continued moving forward.

Did Eddie have a plan in mind to somehow escape from the Nazis? But he could not understand how he could escape from the sight of the Nazis.

But he had understood that if he did not run away now, his consequence would be death. While walking, he saw a drainage pipe, without thinking he jumped into the drainage pipe. The width of the pipe was more. With the help of which Eddie could run very far.

Even though he had found a way with the help of the pipe, this journey of escape was not going to be easy at all. Icy water was coming from the pipe, which was extremely cold. Eddie had neither shoes nor proper clothes. He only had the courage to survive. While writing this book, Eddie cannot believe how he survived that time? Therefore the author advises that a person should never take his life lightly.

The value of life is understood only by those who do not have it left.

By the end of the war, Eddie's mental health had deteriorated.

In the journey so far, we have come to know that Eddie has endured a lot in his life. Along with the injuries inflicted by the Nazis, he has also endured many years of humiliation. During this time, he has lost his parents as well as his close friend forever.

This person was none other than his old friend Kurt, the same Kurt whom Eddie had thought was dead. She felt that Kurt had left her forever. But Kurt was alive and after this meeting, Eddie also got a reason to stay alive.

Kurt and Eddie met, rented a room and decided to start their lives again. After a few days, Eddie also found his sister, who came and started living with him.

One day while working in the office, Eddie meets Flore. While talking, Eddie tells his story to Flore. And Flore becomes enamored with Eddie's story.
