Osho's meditation first gained recognition in the 1970s. The reason for this is very easy to understand. These meditating people used to dance and sing. Lived a very happy and sexually liberated life. Osho's method was very different from all other meditations. While other methods emphasized stillness and solitude of body and mind, Osho emphasized on movement and living among people. If you also like this method of meditation then you should take the help of this book. In this book you will find some tricks that will make it easier for you to get started. Along with this, you will also get an approach to meditation which is very different from others. By reading this summary, you will also know how dancing and jumping can increase your awareness. How to keep your ego under control? And how to keep your mind calm by meditating in light and darkness?
Meditation is done in many ways but Osho's meditation focuses on self-awareness. Because of this your positivity increases and you start living more happily. Whatever you are doing, whether you are standing, sitting, walking, running or lying down, according to Osho, all these are meditation if you remain aware while doing them. Osho emphasizes on “watching”. Watching something means that you are aware. You pay attention to everything around you. But a watcher is not swayed by any emotion. You see happiness, you see sadness but you don't get immersed in it. You remain calm and carefree. Everything is external to you. It is also true that such change does not happen overnight. This process takes time. It has four stages. The first stage involves increasing awareness at the physical level. Start with yourself. Observe your activities. Focus on the connection of body and mind. The second stage will be to pay attention to your thinking. This step is a little more difficult than the first one. Your thoughts come and go for two minutes but they have a lot of power. They can make you happy, upset or restless. If you write down every thought that comes to your mind and read it after some time, you will be surprised that you even thought all this.
As practice increases, such thoughts go away. Now comes being aware of your feelings and mood. Perhaps this is the most difficult task. Our emotions have a deep impact on us. Your mood can control you and your activities. But always remember that nothing has any effect on the Watcher. When you become aware of your body, thoughts and emotions, you understand how these three are interconnected. By understanding their connections, you start moving towards ultimate peace. Only when there is coordination between these three, you can move towards the fourth stage i.e. self-knowledge. This is the stage of ultimate bliss. Achieving this should be one's ultimate destination..
Leave all the questions and worries behind and start meditation.
Now the question comes that how do you do meditation? There are many ways to meditate but these methods cannot be called meditation. Practicing these methods is meditation. Actually you do not have to meditate but you have to concentrate and this is a work which can be done without any effort. When you start meditation you are trying to do something. As time and your awareness increase, you become effortless. That means you don't try to do anything, everything just happens automatically. This is how meditation works. You should give 1 hour daily for meditation. Perhaps you might be wondering why so much time. But just ask yourself, is taking out 1 hour in 24 hours really too much?
Now find a place for meditation. It would be better for everyone if you sit in the lap of nature, away from the noise of the world and meditate. If you can sit under a tree, it would be great. Osho says that trees are always meditating. However, finding such a place is not possible for everyone. In such a situation, you should find a quiet place inside the house. If possible, keep this space only for meditation. Otherwise, whatever activity you do there, some energy is left. Because of this it may become difficult to meditate. You must assume that the place where you meditate is a sacred place. So take off your shoes before coming here. Consider this as the first step of meditation. Leave your worries, problems, desires and all other things there along with the shoes. That means leave the remaining 23 hours along with the shoes. It will not be so easy to calm your heart and mind immediately. This is why Osho's meditation often begins with some activity or catharsis. Maybe you are feeling angry. You may be surrounded by some sadness or problem. So why not shout or dance or sing or get yourself out of this state. Next you will read about some such methods and see how such activities can help prepare your mind and body for meditation. In Osho's Dynamic Meditation, the help of activities and mantras is taken for catharsis.
Be it meditation, awareness or watching things, all these take you towards peace. But how can one attain peace when there is turmoil in the mind? This is not a bulb that was extinguished by turning off the switch. All these are obstacles in the way of peace which need to be removed. Once you clear the way everything becomes easy. The universe extends its arms to you. There is a complete series of Osho's Active Meditation. The first one is called Osho Dynamic Meditation.
It is of one hour and is divided into five parts. The first three parts are of ten minutes each and the last two are of fifteen minutes each. The first is to take fast breaths. This provides energy to your body. Breathe loudly and quickly. There is no need to give full focus to it or do it in a rhythm. Keep moving around and breathing. At this time you are filling yourself with energy. This energy has to be released after ten minutes. Let it flow like a waterfall. Dance, sing, jump, shout and even cry if you feel like it. That means you have to do whatever you feel at that time. There is no need to think anything about it. Whatever happens naturally has to be done. This is catharsis. In these ten minutes you relax yourself completely.
In the third part, you have to jump with your hands up. When your feet hit the ground, you have to shout loudly - "Hu.. Hu.. Hu.." This is the mantra of this meditation. That is all. If there is any kind of burden on your mind and heart, then this mantra lightens it and prepares you for the next round. The next step is to freeze yourself. You have to remain as you were. Coughing, moving, itching, nothing to be done. Whatever is happening, observe everything like a watcher. Whatever energy has been accumulated till now, let it flow into the body. Be completely silent for fifteen minutes. In the last and fifth step you have to celebrate. Dance, dance, celebrate. Give thanks to nature. Bring positivity within yourself and stay with this positivity for the remaining 23 hours.
There are many methods of catharsis in Osho's active meditation.
Next is Kundalini meditation. Consider this a form of dynamic meditation that you just read. It consists of four steps of fifteen minutes each. The first step is shaking and letting go. Start moving every part of the body and let the energy move upward from the feet. The second step is to dance. Dance as it comes. There is no need to use your brain. In the third step you have to remain steady. If you want, stand or sit if you want, but keep in mind that you have to remain completely still. Close your eyes and feel what is happening inside and outside your body. In the last i.e. fourth step, lie down with your eyes closed. Many people believe that due to the dance and activities done in the second step, energy starts flowing in the body and all kinds of tension goes away. That means everything that can become a hindrance in meditation and awareness. In Osho Nataraja Meditation, dance itself becomes meditation. It is an hour long process whose first step is a 40 minute dance. Close your eyes and start dancing as if there is nothing else in your world except this moment. You are not in any dance competition. Therefore, there should be no worry about whether one can dance or not. Just keep dancing, keep dancing. Here you don't even need awareness. Keep doing what you are doing. The second step is of 20 minutes. Lie down with your eyes closed and become completely calm. After this, five minutes are celebrated and happiness is expressed. Finally comes Osho Nadabrahma meditation. Although there is a trend of doing it early in the morning, but if it is done at any time then it is beneficial. Although it is said to be done on an empty stomach. Its first step takes 30 minutes. You start it in some comfortable way. Now start humming so loudly that others can also hear. Hum in such a way that vibrations are felt. As if your body is completely empty and waves are coming from it. You just have to feel them coming and going.
The second stage has two parts of seven and a half minutes each. In the first part, place your palms upwards on your navel and then move them outwards in a circular motion. Give your energy to the world. In the other part, keep the palms downwards and reverse the circular rotation method. That means now your palms will meet on your navel. Now you are taking energy from the universe. Feel it coming into you. Now remain completely still and quiet for 15 minutes. You can connect meditation with every task of the day.
Your every work can become a meditation. Even jogging and swimming, if done properly. We do these on automatic mode. If done with some awareness then this can also become meditation. You must be aware of your every movement. Osho even helped a man to quit smoking by changing his habit of smoking to meditation. In this, every step was looked at in depth. Taking the cigarette out of the packet, hitting the tip of the cigarette against the packet, lighting it, inhaling and releasing the smoke. In this way it became an active habit from passive. After three months the man quit smoking. By bringing awareness and getting out of the automatic mode, we can get rid of years old bad habits.
If you know even a little about meditation, then you must have heard that paying attention to your breathing is very beneficial. You can get more benefit from meditation by breathing properly. Vipassana is a technique of meditation. This is perhaps the most important method of meditation because Osho calls it the essence of meditation. Vipassana is completely based on awareness. Pay attention to how you move your body. How do you bring food to your mouth while eating? How do you walk? Be aware of your emotions and mood. Pay attention to when you feel them changing or coming and going. Don't judge them. There is no need to stop them either. Just have to remain alert. Pay attention to your breathing. Do you feel movements in your chest or abdomen when you breathe in and out? In most western countries, people breathe through their chest. Because they have been told that a broad chest is good and a protruding stomach is bad. But this is not the case in many eastern countries. Take the example of Japan. Look at the Laughing Buddha. His chest is small. The stomach is big and protruding. they look happy. How you breathe may become a habit of yours. But when you are resting or about to fall asleep, you breathe from your stomach and not from your chest. Pay attention to this next time. Do you feel more comfortable this way? This is another technique that you can use at any time. This also increases your awareness. Stress goes away. In fact, you pay attention one after the other from your head to your feet. Stretch the muscles of each part, wait for some time and then leave them loose. We knowingly or unknowingly cause a lot of stress to the heart and mind throughout the day. This simple exercise helps in eliminating this habit.
Meditating and listening carefully in bright light and darkness helps you become a good watcher.
Such situations often arise in our lives which are completely opposite to each other. Like happiness and sadness or light and darkness. These cannot be avoided. With the help of meditation, we learn to go through them well. We understand that whatever the situation may be, it only lasts for a short while. Evil is associated with good and sorrow is associated with happiness. But nothing lasts forever. But watching them can always be maintained. Both bright light and darkness can teach us a lot. Try it one day. Lie down under the clear sky. Look at its blue expanse. If your eyes water, let them. But wait. Don't even think about the sky. Just have to watch it carefully. Feel that there is no difference between the sky and you. You have also become the sky. You can do the same in the dark too. The right way would be to do it in complete darkness, away from the glare of the city. Exactly like it happens in the mountains when the sky is completely clear. Keep staring. This is much easier to do than it sounds. It may feel strange to keep your eyes open without being able to see anything. But keep staring into the darkness. Your eyes will start watering and you will also feel a little discomfort. Then a time will come when there will be no difference between you and the darkness. You will become one with the darkness. There is nothing wrong in this. We consider light as positive and darkness as negative.
Whereas in this universe darkness is the time when rejuvenation takes place. When we get tired after working in the light, we regain our strength only by resting in the dark. Even simple acts like sitting and listening can change the way we live. These are all the basics of Zen custom. If you do this for just one hour today, you will not get any benefit. But if you keep doing it daily for a few months, you will be on the right track because sitting idle doing nothing is one of the hardest things in the world. But you keep trying. This method can work no matter where you are sitting. Still, it would be best that you choose a place where you do not have the chance to get lost seeing various things. You can sit in front of a plain, white wall. Do these exercises for 30 minutes. Just stay alert without focusing on any one particular thing.
It is also important to be aware of the things that can become obstacles in meditation.
None of the techniques of Osho meditation are difficult. Still, some people may face problems in this. Our mind only wants difficult things. He likes to be in all kinds of entanglements. The brain does not like easy things or straight answers. Can there be any benefit in gazing and dancing in front of the wall? The power of our mind cannot be estimated. But it can also become an obstacle in the path of enlightenment. Ego can come into this. Ego teaches us to earn more money and create status in the society. But it will never say that you should remain calm and watch for some time. Society also does not talk about sitting idle like this. Therefore ego and restlessness of the mind become the two biggest obstacles in the way of meditation. There are contradictions in meditation too. Because there is a paradox hidden in every truth. The essence of meditation is to control yourself. But right now your mind is controlling you. Your ego, ambition, mood, thoughts, emotions, all these have trapped you. You are living your life according to them. All these are giving you stress and are standing in the way of your happiness, peace and joy. You cannot control anything by sitting silent or still, but meditation teaches you all this.
When you start being aware and keep looking at everything superficially without getting immersed in it, then you are not affected by anger or any such feeling. No matter what happens, it cannot shake you. You don't allow anything else to influence you or make you act like a puppet. Even if you recognize the importance of removing the ego and meditation, you still find it difficult to understand how to silence the chattering mind. Whenever you sit and try to concentrate and be aware, a lot of thoughts start looming and your attention gets divided. This is completely natural and you will find some comfort in the fact that it takes time for most people to get over it. People who practice Zen meditation spend months and even years just practicing listening before moving forward. Only then do they feel confident that they are learning to listen properly.
You may find it easier if you think about meditation in the same way as you think about love. Love cannot be expressed in words. When you really fall in love with someone, how do you tell them? Meditation is exactly like that because the watcher has no words. He neither judges nor defines things. He just observes them. When you start taking the help of words, it means that you are no longer watching things. You are being influenced by them. So think like love. You may also see yourself as a headless person, floating in the air, or flowing like water. You can also feel that a lot of light is entering your heart. After all, this is the place you have to reach.
overall
Meditation is a practice you can do anytime, anywhere no matter what you are doing. All it takes is awareness. Although meditation may be a bit difficult for some people, there are methods that help in increasing awareness, reducing ego and calming the rest of the mind. Osho Active Meditation is designed to help you free yourself from the bondage of various emotions and thoughts. After this you get peace. With the help of some activities and mantras, you free your body and mind from external noise. You become so tired that you are unable to pay attention to unnecessary questions or worries and simply become absorbed in meditation.
What to do
You have to do this exercise for a whole month. Just listen for an hour every day. Do nothing but listen. This may seem like very absurd advice. But those who have done this practice have seen clear results and have lived the rest of their lives with great peace and tranquility.
